Best Spaces: The Powder Room

October 5, 2018

Happy Friday everyone!

Welcome to our design blog.

A powder room is a half bath (only toilet and sink) that is typically reserved for guest use and located on the main level of the home. Even though powder rooms are often very utilitarian, they are also an open canvas when it comes to styling. From Moroccan tile patterns to vessel sinks, half baths can take on an array of styles. Powder rooms can be the perfect place to stray from your home's palette and take a design risk. Here are a few awesome powder rooms that might give you some inspiration for your next bathroom remodel!

1: Floating Vanity

Floating vanities are a great way to make a small space feel larger. The void under the vanity tricks the eye into thinking the space is bigger than it is. Sometimes, strip lighting is added under a floating vanity to accentuate the void space making the space feel even bigger.

2. Fun Wallpaper

As stated in the first paragraph - powder rooms are the perfect place to take a design risk. Wallpaper can be an inexpensive way to transform the entire space. If it is carried from floor to ceiling, wallpaper can also make the space feel larger.

3. Bold Black Walls

If you want a high contrast look, don't be afraid to paint the walls black! This can create a dramatic and exciting powder room. When executed correctly, other elements in the space can be used to balance and soften the heaviness of black.

4. Fresh and Minimal Palette

Contrary to the last image, this powder room is effortlessly minimal and timeless. Keeping the larger surfaces neutral gives flexibility when it comes to styling. This way, accents like artwork, plants, towels, and other accessories can be at the forefront.

5. Eclectic Character

In almost all renovation projects, there are certain elements that have to be designed around. For example, if there is a radiator in the space, bring it into the design by unifying it with other eclectic items in the space. By doing this, the radiator can be a piece that is celebrated and not hidden.

6. Stained Vanity

A stained vanity can add a casual rustic aesthetic to a powder room. In any space, wood adds texture and a neutral color to the color palette. In a powder room, it can create a beautiful juxtaposition with an ornate tile, as shown in this image.

7. Unexpected Floor Tile

Another way to take a design risk is by picking an unexpected floor covering. Because powder rooms usually have a small footprint, louder floor patterns can work without being overwhelming. Depending on the pattern, you can also use this method to make room feel bigger.

8. Black Hardware

Hardware is a small detail that can make a big difference, especially in a smaller space. Using a hardware finish that accentuate certain parts of the color scheme in your bathroom can make the space more visually appealing. As seen in the image above, the black hardware stands out against the shiplap wall while complimenting the black in the floor tile.

9. Round Mirror

As simple as it may seem, round mirrors can visually change the space in a big way. In the image above, the round mirror helps to highlight the round nature of the roses in the wallpaper. They can also help to soften any heavier materials or textures in the space.

10. Painted Shiplap

Paint is an awesome way to add flair and personality to the monotony of the white shiplap trend. The shiplap also adds the subtle texture that is needed to balance the paint color. This method seems to be gaining popularity and could be seen more in the future.
