What Is My Design Style?

Happy Friday everyone!

Welcome to our design blog.

As mentioned in the last post, 2019 Design Resolutions, today's post is all about finding your own design style. This is the first step in creating a space that looks complete and balanced. Your home should be a reflection of who you are expressed through furniture, materials, and accessories. In this post, I will share with you some tips that will help you uncover your personal design style.

1: Work with your "givens".

Be content with the architectural elements of your home. Just because you don't have the same space as some of your inspiration photos doesn't mean you can't achieve a similar look. Pick and choose elements from those photos to make the space your own. Embrace the quirks and areas you might like to remodel in your home because they are what make your space feel unique.

2. Don't forget function.

Another important aspect of establishing your own design style is making sure that your style works with your stage of life. For example, young parents might need to add or subtract furniture that works well with young children. Let your space be a reflection of your current life, but know when it is time to move to the next stage. This will help you to emotionally move into life's new transitions with ease. Having a home that compliments your season of life will help you and your loved ones enjoy and utilize that space even more.

3. Declutter!

We keep mentioning this in our posts because it is really important! Decluttering your spaces will help you to appreciate the space itself and not the things in it. From here, you can begin to slowly add pieces back that add life and joy to the space. Remember to be intentional when picking materials, furniture, and accessories for your space.

4. Over time, collect pieces that are meaningful and practical.

You do not and will not have the space of your dreams in one day. Not only would it be tiring, but there would not be enough time to allow yourself to thoughtfully choose the right items for each place. If you don't get it right on the first try, that is okay! Let yourself take risks and rearrange things in order to make it right. Curating the pieces in your home over a period of time is the only way to truly create a balanced space that you love to be in.

Always remember that designing and styling your home is supposed to be a process that involves change and adjustments over time. When your life is changing, it might be time to take a look at changing your environment, too!
