In this week's blog, we're taking a closer look at exterior lighting. Because there are many different types and styles of outdoor lighting, we've found it helpful to divide them up into some categories. Hopefully this guide can provide some clarity! Exterior lighting can range from fully functional to fully aesthetic applications, and make the outside of your home just as beautiful as the inside.

Let's dive in!

1: Path Lighting

Path lighting not only highlights the features of a path and improves the appearance of your yard, it also provides safety for all of its users.  Popular types of path lighting include ground-mounted torches and dome lights, and many of these options can be solar powered.

2. Downlighting

Downlighting covers a wide range of light styles and types, but can be concisely described as a lamp with its illumination pointed only downward. Although the above images are aesthetically very different, each source provides illumination to its target below. These sources can provide a general glow, or be more concentrated umbrella shaped look.

3. Flood Lights/Spotlights

Floodlights are commonly used in sports, and spotlights in the theater. But they can also be used in exterior lighting! Floodlights cover a wide area and can highlight features as well as deter burglars. They can be mounted to a pole, a wall, or the ground. Spotlights serve a similar purpose, but their light is more focused and is generally used to highlight features like foliage or trees.

4. Sconces

Sconces have a range of interior and exterior styles and are generally used for accent and wayfinding purposes. Copper, brass, and galvanized steel are popular materials used in exterior lighting as they are more resistant to rust and corrosion than untreated metal and steels. As with any lighting source, a wide range of lamps from incandescent to halogen and LED can be used, although LED is the most energy efficient and longest lasting.

5. Decorative Lighting

Decorative lighting is the cherry on the top! For outdoor patios and pergolas, globe string lighting provides the perfect ambiance. Holiday lighting also falls under this category, and can take on many different forms. Lanterns are also a fun way to provide some interest and warmth to your outdoor space. The possibilities are endless!

3. Entry Lighting

Entry lighting serves an aesthetic as well as functional purpose. They add a welcoming touch to your entryway and can help locate keys in the dark. There are a wide range of styles and types of these lights as well. Popular right now: matte black lantern style pendants against a white exterior.
